Mar. 27th, 2012 08:35 pmIt's all the same once she's back through the door.
She starts running as soon as she's in the open and keeps going until the forest is all around her and a simple broken ankle will stop her just as effectively as being surrounded. She knows someone is after her or will be after her. She knows someone is ahead of her.
She finds the laboratory easily. If you know the trials, the conditions, the wherefores and hows, you can track the orchid supplies here, the livestock provided there, find the convergence and the building. Get in, sabotage, get out, destroy. This deep in the jungle, so well hidden, their security is terrible. Amanda doesn't intentionally kill everyone because she doesn't have to. She just puts the charges where she estimates they'll cause the most damage, gets out, and lights them off. Then it's just a quick sweep through the last building to be sure they're not freezing anything project-relevant there, and she can start looking, once more.
As she climbs out the tiny window of the shed she smells it.
Green anacondas have musk glands. An angry, caged, and augmented snake has its own definite reek, and although the scent blends well with the molds and greens of the jungle Amanda has been smelling it for years. She eases her body back inside the window and moves up against the wall.
It pours by, its misshapen head swerving angrily ahead of its too-smooth bulk, and Amanda watches it pass as coolly as she can. The chemical tangs in the air, burning and scattered explosives, will shield her small mammal-scent for as long as she can stay still and calm. She sees every scale pristine and shining as it glides by, not a twist of scar tissue or knot of burning to be seen.
The end of its tail has a long, distinctive spine, as much her signature as the stroke of her pen. That line was supposed to be gone, destroyed by her own hands. They must have found one of the Queen's clutch somehow. Amanda swallows failure and picks up the pack with the last of the C4. It was going to go towards destroying the little concrete outbuilding. She'll just have to get more.
